Police open fire at Tibetans protesting cement factory pollution (ICT)
May 17 | Police opened fire on Tibetans at a cement factory in the Tibetan area of Amdo (Labrang in Gansu) on Saturday (May 15) after local villagers, worried about pollution from the factory, started to rebuild a road that had been closed by the expansion of the factory. Fifteen people were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds or injuries from beatings by police, although no one was killed, according to an exile Tibetan source in contact with Tibetans in the area. May 17 | A Tibetan primary school teacher arrested in mid-2008 by the Chinese intelligence in Nagchu Prefecture of Tibet Autonomous Region had been sentenced to a 15-year jail term in Jan’10 for her alleged involvement in political activities, reported the exile Tibetan government on its website Tibet.net May 15.
Lhamo Kyab was taken into custody from a primary school at Driru (Chinese: Biru) County on the third day of her having joined it. She was taken to her home in Nagchu County which the officials raided and searched. Tibetans sentenced to lengthy prison terms (RFA)
According to court paper smuggled out from Tibet, Tibetan singer, Tashi Dhondup, 30, was sentenced to 15 months for singing songs that supported Tibetans independence and the Dalai Lama.
A second document from the trial in Gansu province of a Tibetan monk convicted in connection with a 2008 region-wide uprising against Chinese rule paints a detailed picture of the case made against him. The monk, Thabkhe Gyatso was sentenced to 15 years in prison for his involvement in the March 14, 2008 protest in Labrang. Read More
U.S. State Department Finds “Severe Repression” in Tibet
In a clear rebuke of official Chinese claims, the U.S. Department of State has provided a catalogue of human rights abuses and economic, social and cultural discrimination faced by Tibetans under Chinese rule. The findings are contained in the Tibet section of the State Department’s “Country Report on Human Rights Practices for 2009, ” released today in Washington, D.C.

January 30 – A Chinese court in Sogpo Mongol Autonomous County, Malho Tibet Autonomous Prefecture, has sentenced a Tibetan singer, Tashi Dondrup to one year and seven months’ jail term for producing a music album with “subversive songs”. Authorities banned his album titled “Torture without Trace” in November last year. He had been held at a detention centre in Sog County. Read More…
China Jails Tibetan Filmmaker Dhondup Wangchen for 6 Years(Tibet.net)
Dhondup Wangchen, the Tibetan filmmaker who was arrested by the Chinese government for documenting the current situation in Tibet and Tibetan people’s aspiration for return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Tibet, has been sentenced to six years in prison, according to information received by the Central Tibetan Administration.
The sentence was pronounced on 28 December 2009, according to the report. But it is not known where the filmmaker was tried. Read More…
